The ANUMC has a long and proud tradition of challenging and adventurous large scale expeditions. The ANUMC Expedition Fund was established in 2007 with the aim of continuing and fostering this tradition.
The ANUMC Expedition Fund is intended to assist with expeditions in any of the sports where the club is active. Any expedition which is of substantial scale, is challenging, and which will develop skills, leadership and teamwork, can be considered for an award from the Expedition Fund.
Awards will be made by the ANUMC Executive, after seeking advice from the Committee and other qualified people as appropriate.
One annual award may be made, after advertising within the ANUMC. A maximum of $2000 will be provisionally awarded; in most cases, this will not be sufficient for expeditions of the scale that are envisaged. Expedition leaders may use the award from the Fund as evidence of the seriousness and quality of their proposal in securing other funds and sponsorship. The award from the Expedition Fund will be finalized when the Executive is satisfied that the expedition is financially and organizationally viable.
On completion of the expedition, participants will be expected to share their experiences with the Club through slide shows, discussion evenings, or whatever other ways are effective in sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm within the Club.
The Executive reserves the right not to make an award in a particular year if no suitable proposal is received, or due to financial constraints.
The 2008 Award was given to Charles Jenkins to climb Mt Sabre in the Darran Mountains in southern New Zealand.
The 2009 Award was give to Matthew Hollingworth who will lead a team of climbers on an attempt of the 5000m Mt Kenya in central Africa in late 2009.
