This page sets out the clubs policy in relation to car costs for snow trips. Ski trips would be around $20-$30 cheaper per person if drivers were able to provide cars with annual parks passes, snow chains and roof racks. Given that car costs are shared ammong the group there is little incentive for drivers to spend their own money to save money for everybody else on the trip. This has meant that only club members who do their own private trips have purchased their own equipment. Therefore this policy, which is more generous to drivers, has been prepared to encourage more drivers to buy their own gear and thereby pass some of the savings onto other members.
Parks Passes
Entry to Kosciouszko National Park is currently $27 per car per day or $190 for a year. Drivers can save money for themselves and other club members by buying an annual pass and using it for more than 8 days (4 weekends). The problem is that a club member who buys an annual pass takes all the risk (ie pays $190 up front) but gets little of the reward (the savings are passed onto all members). This has meant that in previous years only regular skiers who do private trips have bought annual passes.
To encourage all drivers going to the snow more than 8 days to buy annual passes the club has the following policy:
This system should maximise the savings for all club members by encouraging drivers to buy annual passes thereby making club trips cheaper once the annual pass is "paid off".
Snow Chains
Snow chains can be purchased brand new fairly cheap (for around $100 and sometimes less) but are expensive to hire ($15-$25 a day). Unfortunately few members own their own chains and the club can only buy chains for the most common wheel sizes. To encourage club members to buy snow chains, $5 per trip will be added to the car costs of any driver supplying their own chains.
Petrol and Wear and Tear Costs
These rates are designed to cover petrol plus extra for wear and tear and some of the other costs associated with owning a car. They do not cover all the costs of owning a car as these rates are less than half the car cost Rates per business kilometre as published by the Australian Taxation Office.
| Car Size | Engine Size | $ per km |
|---|---|---|
| Small Car | 1600cc (1.6 litre) or less | $0.20 per km |
| Medium Car | 1601cc - 2600cc (1.601 litre - 2.6 litre) | $0.25 per km |
| Large Car | 2601cc (2.601 litre) and over | $0.30 per km |
The most common places that the ANUMC holds ski trips are all virtually the same distance from the ANU. The following trips would all involve approximately ~450 km of travel.
Based upon 450km of travel the below table shows the Petrol and Wear and Tear Costs of standard club snow trips.
| Car Size | Cost for Standard 450km Ski Trip |
|---|---|
| Small Car | $90 |
| Medium Car | $112.5 |
| Large Car | $135 |
