We're taking the navigation workshop outdoors this weekend to gain some practical exposure. The plan is to go for a bushwalk out at Namadgi, and navigate to a number of locations, practice resections, reading map and terrain, following bearings, etc. We'll go as one group, and I'll explain the navigational techniques on the way. Bring your compass if you have one, or hire one from the Gear store. I will bring maps, so that everyone can do the navigation for themselves as we go.
Departure is 9.00 on Sunday morning from the SRA, and we'll meet at Honeysuckle creek camp ground at 10. I'll arrange cars via email (no pretrip) - please fill in the number of car seats you have when you sign up. You can also go straight to Honeysuckle if you live down south, but please drop me an email to let me know.
We will cover approximately 10 km, partially on track, but mostly off track to see some variety of terrain. Duration is 4-5 hours. Terrain is mostly good to walk on, with occasional sections of some shrub, some uphill and downhill (about 300-400m of altitude in total) with a few short steep sections. I'm still working on the exact route - it will be a loop, with possibilities to turn back early if necessary. According to the club's bushwalking rating, the trip classifies as
Distance: Short to medium
Terrain: medium, off track and track, not wet
Sign-up is open to everyone, not just people that came to the nav workshop. If the group gets too big, attendees will get preference. Please sign up by Friday lunchtime, to give me enough time to sort out cars and maps.
Queenbeyan has vertical climbs that can be top-roped! I'm running a day trip to Queenbeyan (previously Kambah) to do some easy climbs (mid-teens), maybe greater if anyone wants to do them.
People who are up for an easy day climbing, and have some experience climbing outdoors and belaying are welcome to come. If you're unsure send me an e-mail on melstamell@hotmail.com.
People should bring their own harness, shoes, belay devices etc and i'll borrow the rest from the club. Also, you may want to bring warm clothes as it could be cold.
We'll meet in front of the uni gym at 9:30 am (apologies if this seems late but i have things i need to do in the morning).
Hi
The aim of this weekend is too spend 3 days climbing in a very nice place.
No long walk no hassle.
Various grade and top roping possible as well.
Transport:
Car sharing to organize between the participants.
When to come and when to come back??
I think it could be great to drive there Friday evening and come back Monday evening.
However, it is still possible to leave Canberra Saturday morning. If you have to work on Monday, it is possible to try to organize that as well (depending on the drivers)
This issue has to be discussed and sorted out by email or at the pretrip.
Accommodation:
Camping is easy and not far from the cliff.
Details in the guidebook, and soon on your favorite ANUMC website.
Food and drinks:
BYO.
Please come with all the food you need to avoid the hassle of having to go back to town to get some.
Beer and wine are welcome (with moderation :-)
Climbing skills:
I am sorry but I am not a climbing instructor. It will be a nicer and safer trip for everybody if EACH CLIMBER IS INDEPENDENT.
This means NO SIGNUPS FROM PEOPLE WITHOUT ANY OUTDOOR CLIMBING EXPERIENCE and/or who doesn't know how to belay a leader safely. You also have to be able to ABSEIL ALONE AND WITH CONFIDENCE.
What to bring:
gear for camping and gear for climbing.
Do not expect a detailled list from me... I m not your mother... You are supposed to know all of that... :-)
Ask an experienced person if you are not sure what to bring.
Options:
if you are a surfer you can come too, you will surf in the morning and climb in the afternoon. Idem if you are a fisherman.
In case of excessive wind or bad weather on the coast it is still possible to go to Nowra or Nerriga.
PreTrip:
I hope it will be possible to organize that trip by email and without the hassle of a pretrip meeting.
If we have to organize a trip meeting it will probably in a pub an evening during next week.
More info later about this topic.
Gear:
bring everything you have!!!
NO CLIMBER WITHOUT HELMET- borrow one yourself from the club (same for harnesses and shoes).
I will borrow static ropes from the club and other useful gear.
Let me know the gear you have by email - so I know what to borrow from the club.

This trip will circumnavigate (and climb) Mt Jagungal in the Snowy Mountains. Mt Jagungal is one of the mythical destinations for cross country skiers. Check it out before the snow comes. The walking will be 1/3 over untracked terrain and the rest on firetrails or tracks. Days will be less than 20kms. We will start on the eastern boundary of the Kosciuzsko National Park. Access will be by 4 wheel drive (Subarus are OK) - the cars are parked about 1 km from Cesjacks Hut. We will walk in an anti-clockwise direction up to Tibedeous Hut (aka Mackeys) then past the ruin of O'Keefes climbing up Jagungal as a side trip plus an unlikely waterfall that not many people know about. Then onto Grey Mare Hut, Valentine's Falls and Valentine's Hut and then out via Mawson's Hut and Cesjack's Hut. The walking should be generally easy with medium length days. We will depart early Saturday Morning returning Monday evening. The weather forecast looks OK for the weekend (as of Monday). The rumours of lots of snow in the area are completely unfounded - I was there last weekend and all the snow that fell at the end of April is gone. Numbers may be limited by 4WD vehicles.
For those people who like combining mountain biking and food... and are hanging out locally on the weekend.
We'll meet at Tilley's (wattle st lyneham) at 11 am Saturday morn (7 June)... head up to Bruce Ridge singletrack for a spin... then if you're keen we'll have yum cha 10 mins ride away at the Macquarie shops.
Happy for it to be a fairly cruisy spin - Bruce Ridge is not that hilly!
Silhouette Slab is a remote crag on the back of Mt Scabby, with a range of trad routes, some easy. I'm thinking of this as a hybrid climbing and mountaineering activity, with logistics, fitness and teamwork all part of the fun. The walk in is an afternoon from the vicinity of Yaouk, and according to the guidebook there is camping and water near the cliff (this is all pre-fire information though). I plan on getting there on the Saturday of the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend, getting camped, and scoping out the crag; climbing on Sunday, packing up and coming back on Monday, possibly with a route first. From what I've seen, this is a trip for experienced bushwalkers and rock climbers, and I'm looking at it as an opportunity to get folks together who might be interested in doing similar, but bigger, things in NZ next season.

This Monday public holiday Namadgi day walk visits the summit of Mt Orroral (1609m), the highest of the granite peaks between the Orroral River and Rendezvous Creek valleys. Starting at the old Orroral Tracking Station, the first 4km of the route involves a mostly unrelenting 400m climb up a fire trail to a Geodetic Observatory known as the Lunar Laser Range. The effort is rewarded with increasingly better views out across Orroral Valley to the ridges beyond. From the observatory we head south-west through potentially thick and nasty scrub for about 1.1km, ascending a further 190m to eventually scramble through huge boulders and stone ramparts onto the granite tors of Mt Orroral. The mountain views from the summit’s rock platforms are superb. Amongst the peaks that, weather permitting, will be visible are Mt Gudgenby, Mt Namadgi, Mt Ginini and Mt Bimberi. If time and enthusiasm allows we’ll return to Orroral Valley by heading south-east from the summit, descending 400m over 2.5km to reach the Nursery Swamp walking track which we’ll follow 1.5km back to the road. Otherwise it’ll be about 5km back the way we came.
Navigation theory sessions are designed to improve navigation skills within the club by giving you the opportunity to improve your skills at your own pace. The theory sessions will be in a classroom on the ANU campus from 6pm to 7:30pm on Tuesday nights during May. They are divided up into 4 sessions (First Timers, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced) so that every single ANUMC member will be able to learn something new by attending the theory sessions relevant to them.
How can I learn to navigate?
The theory sessions will help you to learn both navigation theory and practical skills within the classroom. In the class room you can complete the first 2 steps of a proven process of learning navigation which involves:
1) Learning the theory of navigation in the classroom.
2) Learing practical navigation skills in the classroom.
3) Gaining navigation experience by using the theory and skills.
As examples of things you will learn, in the first session you will learn the theory of how to convert a grid bearing to a magnetic bearing by watching and listening to a powerpoint presention and then you will practice doing the conversion with your compass. In the final session you will learn the theory of using a GPS before using a GPS to plot a grid reference on your map. You will be able to start to gain practical experience by attending Navigation Practical Sessions which are planned to occur during and after the theory sessions as well as in your own time by participating in club trips.
Who are the theory sessions for?
All club members from those who have never even seen a topographic map to experienced navigators will be able to improve their navigation skills through these theory sessions.
What sessions should I attend?
If you are First Time navigator or Beginner you should attend the first three sessions. If your an Intermediate or Advanced Navigator you should attend all sessions. This is so that you can learn how to teach and help teach Beginners in the first few sessions as well as consolidating your skills before the later sessions.
Is this an accredited course with qualified instructors?
The sessions will be run by club members who have practical and theoretical navigation experience gained from rogaining or teaching navigation in the military. However, the sessions are not part of a recognised or accredited course and will not use formally qualified instructors.
Cost?
There will be a small cost of $10 for attending as many sessions as you want which will be used to cover the cost of training materials such as buying new maps. Check with the club but as usual trip leaders should be able to use club subsidies (eg trip leaders training subsidy) to cover this small cost. Non-Members will need to either join the club or pay a non-members fee of $30 on top of the $10.
I am looking for interest for a mountaineering based trip to New Zealand this winter. Signing up is not a commitment to come, but means I will include you in discussions.
Actual activities will be dependent on conditions and exact dates are not determined. Mountaineering, alpine tramping, alpine skiing, resort skiing, ice climbing, rock climbing, paragliding and sitting in a hut playing cards are all options depending on the conditions we get, and the people who want to come. The nominal goal is to do some basic mountaineering. I am also keen to arrange some avalanche training.
I can only take 2 weeks off, others may choose to stay longer. The two sets of dates that have been suggested are:
14th of June until the 29th of June.
or
5th July until 20th July.
This trip is intended for people with some mountaineering experience or training, although people without these skills would be welcome to join us for the other activities.
Sign up so I have your details, and let me know when you would want to go, what your experience level is, and what you are interested in doing.

A practical navigation session to consolidate skills learnt during the theory sessions.
This will consist of a few hours of walking and navigating around either Mt Ainslie or Black Mountain.
If you are interested sign up online and then meet at the SRA at 10am Sunday Morning.
FYI (from ACTRA website)
The 2008 Paddy Pallin Rogaine, PAGODAS, PINES AND PUNISHMENT will be held approximately 2 hours west of Sydney.
The area is a mix of plantation pine forest and native bush with some beautiful rocky pagodas. The course has many marked roads, as well as many unmarked trail bike tracks. The course is set at elevations between 1000 and 1200 metres, so you won't have to be a mountain goat to have a good day out. The setters have created a course over a larger area than typical that will offer plenty of choices and diversity for those wishing to roam, all without feeling too much like baa baa black sheep after contestants disperse. A course for the fabulously fit and family fun alike.
The course will be moderately fast within the open pine forests and on tracks, with light scrub for those seeking the challenge and rewards of the adjoining bushland.
The area for parking is limited so please consider car sharing with other teams - as well as saving greenhouse gases and petrol costs. Camping at the Hash House will be available at no cost.
Access to the Hash House (where we start, finish and generally be merry) will be readily achievable for 2WD vehicles that are pothole aware.
go to http://nswrogaining.org/AboutEvents/Events/08PP/08PP.htm to register your team, and for more information.
Sign up to this trip if you are looking for team partners (also send me an email), want to arrange transport or to receive more information closer to the event.

Winter Solstice in the Australian Alps. The days will be short, the night will be long with sunset at 4:59pm and sunrise at 7:18am. It’ll be cold and dark. There’ll be snow, ice and wind. And you can spend this, the longest night of the year, high in the mountains at Tin Hut. Starting at Guthega Power Station (~1320m) we’ll head 11km up the Munyang River Valley along the aqueduct trail to Schlink Pass (~1800m) and from there 4.5km up and over Mt Gungartan (2086m) to Tin Hut (~1850m). Somewhere along the way up we’ll reach the snowline and strapped on our snowshoes. The following day, weather permitting, we’ll return 12.5km to Munyang along the exposed Disappointment Ridge. Previous overnight bushwalking and/or snowshoeing experience recommended. This is a team building trip for Winter Overland so priority will be given to those going to Tasmania in July.
Distance: Long
Terrain: Track/Easy

I'm running a very relaxed top roping trip to Wickerslack this Sunday. The climbs will range from grades 14 - 18. The rock is Limestone!!!
Anyone is welcome, including beginners. If you don't have your own climbing gear (harness, shoes, belay device) then you'll have to rent it off the gear store this Thursday.
We'll leave from the gym at 10:00 am and head out to Queenbeyan. It's a bit of a walk from the car to the climbing area.
Costs: rope fee ($5) and petrol (prob $3-4).
It'll be fun and slow paced (I don't like rushing and it's a Sunday). If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at melstamell@hotmail.com
Hopefully see you then!

Now it's the turn of all the climbing, canyoning and mountaineering gear to be counted.
You get to hang out with a great bunch of people as well as check out all the cool toys the club owns. All being well, there should be some shiny new gear by then. It's also a good chance to do some maintenance on the gear such as replacing cord on hexes, and deciding which cams need replacement slings.
As usual, the club will put on free pizza and soft drinks for those helping out.
No need to sign up, just come along on the night if you can spare a couple of hours.

Winter is a great time of year for climbing on the awesome sandstone crags of Nowra with good sunny days that aren't too hot. We'll drive down on Saturday morning, climb at Hospital Rocks or Thompson's Point then camp overnight at the Animal Park, which is equipped with showers and toilets. Then Sunday, more climbing! Depending on driver availability, there may be the option of coming for one day only. You should have some climbing experience (indoors is fine).
