Aspiring for Aspiring (TRIP FULL)

Start: 15/11/2009 - 12:00pm

End: 07/12/2009 - 12:00pm

Heading across the ditch for yet another attempt at climbing Mt Aspiring in NZ'z southern Alps.

We will spend 8 days on the West coast neves honing our skills with the help of a guide before using the next weather window to walk into Mt Aspiring via French ridge and hopefully climbing the NW ridge. Any weather windows available outside this plan will be used on roadside accessible routes such as Rome ridge in Arthur's pass or climbing out from Mt Cook village.

Tuross Falls Canyoning

Start: 24/11/2009 - 7:30am

End: 24/11/2009 - 8:00pm

Tuross Falls, the perenial favourite of the ANUMC as an easy introduction to canyoning without the long drive to Kanangra or the Blue Mountains. I now have the trip well tuned so that we get maximum fun and minimum hassles. The swims are cool, the abseil awesome and "the pit" spectacular. The ascent out of the pit has to be experienced to be believed!
Just a day trip to show the canyon to a member who is returning home after a too short stay in Australia. Rather inpromptu hence not much notice. Due to the late advertisement of the trip you will need to organise yourself for everything including wet suit, dry bags.
Note:
1) "easy" for canyoning does not imply easy physically. YOu must have a good background of bushwalking and be able to swim >200m nonstop in a comfortable manner.
2) you will only be allowed to do the abseil if you have previous abseiling experience. This is not an abseiling instructional.

Whitewater skills drills

Start: 24/11/2009 - 5:45pm

End: 24/11/2009 - 8:00pm

This week, the Tuesday arvo paddle on the lake will focus on whitewater skills, including rolling, bracing, wet-exits / deepwater entries, and rope skills. We'll aim for the shady end of Springbank and play around until the sun goes down. Seakayakers can cruise further.

*Note: this is not for absolute beginners. You need to be (at least) a regular lake paddler, and competent preparing and paddling all of the whitewater boats on flat water. Expect to swim.

No pre-trip, no signups - just come along to the boatshed at 5:45pm.

Noodles per usual afterwards.

Point Perpendicular sea cliffs

Start: 27/11/2009 - 5:00am

End: 29/11/2009 - 10:00pm

For those that haven't seen the sea cliffs at Jervis Bay, they provide a breathtaking theatre for climbing epics. Unlike your usual crag these require an initial abseil to get to the start of the climb! In some parts you may even get your feet wet. Not for the faint-hearted, but not as exposed as they look for moderately experienced climbers.

I would like a few leaders with confidence in trad climbing. If these could partner up with up-and-coming leaders it would provide a good opportunity to pass on some rope skills and gear placement techniques. For those less keen to roll dice with the sea cliffs, there is also the possibility to set protection on the abseil down, or even a couple of top ropes.

A number of bolt plates will also be essential to secure some of these anchors... there is very little sport climbing or ring bolts in the area. There are, however, a few coves and beaches for swimming, which will be obligatory for all involved. Camping is located at the romantically named, Honeymoon Bay located near the climbing areas. (This has no water facilities so bring a jerry).

Please indicate in your response
a) what experience you have of leading on trad and/or bolts, and climbing generally.
b) if you have a vehicle and how many people it can take packed with gear
c) what kind of ropes and climbing racks you have at your disposal
d) would you prefer a Friday evening or Saturday morning departure.

Wickerslack- friday, afterwork.

Start: 27/11/2009 - 5:30pm

End: 27/11/2009 - 8:30pm

An easy trip - suitable for beginners who have belayed indoors. Easy climbs, nice area. Potential for a swim if the weather is hot. This will be a very laid back trip and is near Queenbeyan so we can go after work!

There are a couple of more challenging climbs for people who have a bit more experience.

You'll need shoes, a belay device, a harness and a helmet. - you can hire these from the gear store.

If you have any questions feel free to drop me an e-mail.

The Inaugural Booroomba Banquet!

Start: 28/11/2009 - 9:16pm

End: 29/11/2009 - 9:16pm

Have you ever wanted to attend the Cocktails at the Castle but decided against it? Maybe the walk is too far, or the thought of a heavy pack too much. Perhaps exams have gotten in the way? Never fear, the Inaugural Booroomba Banquet is here! Imagine cocktails at the castle with a much easier walk, and with views of our own city....

At midday Saturday, we shall make the short trip to the Booroomba Rocks camp site. A mere hour will see us cover the ONE kilometre walk to middle rocks, the location of our banquet. Here, ladies shall slip on exquisite cocktail dresses whilst gentlemen don black tie garb. Sparkling cocktails and delectable morsels of food shall be served, and the banquet will begin. The backdrop will be the stunning vista of the sun setting over Canberra, casting a golden glow across the expanse of Booroomba Rocks. As darkness falls, the merriment shall continue under the light of stars and the rising moon.

As slumber calls, tents and tarps may call, though sleeping under the stars is recommended. The experience of catching dawn from a snug rocky hollow is not to be missed! A lazy morning will see a leisurely walk back to the cars. Once at the vehicles, we can make a side trip to Angle Crossing for a quick dip and some exploring and rock scrambling. Perfection!

-----
The logistics:
I'll need 1-2 bar staff to coordinate the beverages, so if you feel like volunteering, let me know.
Everyone else will need to prepare/bring a plate of food which a large hungry mob can sample. Ideally it will be prepared in Canberra so that it can be served easily on the Saturday afternoon. Formal garb is also a must!

Superb.... feel free to ask any questions you have.

Seakayaking safety drills

Start: 01/12/2009 - 5:45pm

End: 01/12/2009 - 8:30pm

This week, the Tuesday arvo paddle on the lake will focus on seakayaking safety skills, including assisted/solo deepwater re-entries, towing techniques, and setting off emergency flares.

This will be an opportunity to learn and practise some safety and rescue skills that could save a life when paddling offshore. We'll probably aim for the waters between Spinaker and Yarralumla Bay.

*Note: this is not for absolute beginners. You need to be (at least) a regular lake paddler, and competent preparing and paddling all of the club boats on flat water. Expect to swim.

No pre-trip, no signups - just come along to the boatshed at 5:45pm. First pick on boats will go to those signed up for the seakayaking instructional weekends. If you arrive late you will miss out.

Sea Kayak Course Wk1

Start: 05/12/2009 - 9:14am

End: 06/12/2009 - 9:14am

This is a 2 weekend course for all levels of sea kayaking. But if numbers allow, you are welcome to come on 1 or both weekends. Dave Winkworth and a friend will provide instruction, with myself and any other experienced people helping. Dave W used to be the examiner for the highest level of sea-kayak instructor, and has done a lot of expedition paddling. So there should be ample opportunity for more experienced paddlers to learn stuff too. We can tailor the weekends to the needs of those who sign up.
We'll do one weekend of technique training, paddle techniques, packing and gear/safety requirements, basic navigation, ocean awareness, rolling, assisted re-entries, towing, surf technique, sailing, etc. depending on what skill level people are at.
The second weekend will put those skills into operation, and we'll paddle somewhere and camp overnight. It'll be tailored to novices, so don't be put off if you don't have much experience. We will do some training sessions on the lake beforehand.
This weekend we'll camp at Moruya River mouth, so it'll be a bit cheaper for petrol and camping.
Happy to answer questions. Contact me by email or on mob: 0427 809 286
Interclub Adventure Weekend In Kanangra

Start: 11/12/2009 - 5:30pm

End: 13/12/2009 - 10:00pm

Exams are over; Christmas is around the corner: let's get out of Canberra and head to Kanangra!

Join us for a weekend of canyoning, bushwalking, mountain biking and rock climbing deep in the southern Blue Mountains. We'll all head to a common campsite on the Boyd Plateau on the Friday evening to meet up with like-minded outdoors people from clubs including (hopefully) Sydney University Bushwalkers, UNSW Bushwalking Club, UTS Outdoor Adventure Club, Newcastle University Mountaineering Club, and Melbourne University Mountaineering Club. We will be car-camping on the Friday and Saturday nights so gourmet food and fine Shiraz are most appropriate!

Our ANUMC Trip Leaders will be posting a variety of daytrips for the two days in Kanangra. Depending on your abilities and interests, sign up to the two one day trips which interest you. Please also sign up to this 'trip' to give us an overall pitcture of how many people are planning on coming.

An exciting trip for experienced canyoners.

Both trips are a long day with big abseils. We will be starting early (aim to be walking as soon as it is light).

We will decide closer to the time whether to attempt Danae Brook or Kanangra Main based on prior experience of the participants and whether the new 60m ropes have arrived.

Kanangra Adventure Weekend: Masterchef Mystery cookoff!

Start: 12/12/2009 - 7:00pm

End: 12/12/2009 - 8:30pm

Ever wanted to show of your culinary prowess? Or really put your jaffle iron to the test? Or perhaps you're just keen for some interclub rivalry?

At this year's interclub weekend in Kanangra, ANUMC will be hosting a Masterchef-like Mystery ingredient cook off!

Teams of 2 will be given one mystery ingredient that they will need to incorporate into their dish. Teams will have 5 minutes to decide to use their own ingredient, or to negotiate for another ingredient from the other teams. Teams will then have 45 minutes to come up with and cook their creation, then they'll need to plate up and endure the scrutiny of the judges.

Prizes will be awarded for the most delicious, creative (but still edible) and appealing dishes.
All the contestants will then share their dishes with each other for dinner.

What you need to do:
When you sign up, please include a message to say whether you want a mystery ingredient suitable for dinner or for a dessert.
Bring along all of your regular ingredients, but with maybe a few extras (we'll be base camping so you can bring a few other things along).
Bring $3 to cover the cost of your mystery ingredient.
Every meal needs wine- so bring that along to tempt the judges!

Suitable for those with prior abseiling experience.

Kanangra Adventure Weekend: Kalang Falls

Start: 13/12/2009 - 8:00am

End: 13/12/2009 - 6:00pm

On the Sunday of the Inter-Club Adventure weekend at Kanangra, I'd like to do Kalang Falls, a very scenic intermediate canyon. It would be perfect for anyone doing Dione Dell on the Saturday.

Prior abseiling experience a must, as the canyon is mainly a series of long abseils.

Choose your own adventure cycling - back by popular demand

Start: 13/12/2009 - 5:00pm

End: 13/12/2009 - 8:00pm

Looking for something cruisy* to do on a Sunday afternoon? Why not come on this 'choose your own adventure' cycling trip?

The plan is to leave the SRA at 5pm. Which way we head will depend on the toss of a coin. Heads means left, tails means right. Each time we come to a major intersection we'll toss a coin to figure out which way to go. Hopefully, at some point we'll ride past a nice cafe/restaurant where we can grab some dinner.

I'm hoping the coin will take us on some of the lesser known bike paths around Canberra. Don't worry, I'll have my bike path map with me so we don't get lost!

In case of rain, don't forget to bring your wet weather gear as well as the usual water and snacks.

The last time we did this event we ended up riding out to Lake Ginninderra via the O'Connor Ridge. We then stopped for some Spanish tapas before riding back around Black Mountain. I estimate that we rode about 35-40km on that trip and would expect the same again this time. It was a great ride and we did indeed ride along a number of bike paths that I'd never been on before.

*Please note that if you like riding fast this is not the trip for you.
