My favourite trip in the Snowy Mountains. Jagungal is THE mountain to ski to. Many people try this trip, far fewer succeed - either because of weather, or usually because its hard to do in two days. In reality this is a three day trip. We leave on Friday evening, the drive is about 3 hours. You eat dinner in the car either a "packed lunch" or some fast food obtained in Cooma. Hopefully by 8.00pm we have left the cars at Guthega Power Station (Munyang) and are walking up the snow covered road by headlight to Schlink Hilton Hut. Groups take 3 to 4 hours to cover the 11km. Its a steady uphill walk, with a short gentle downhill ski at the end. Its a slog if your pack is heavy . The focus on Friday night is not waste time either on the drive or the walk in. Once at Schlink Hilton the hard part of the trip is over and the rest of the weekend is more leisurely.
The next day we ski over the Kerries to Mawsons Hut some 8kms away. It takes about 2 hours. A fantastic backcountry ski trip. Starts with a very short steep climb (about 10 minutes) and then several kilometers of gentle uphill, then a little bit of up and down followed by a descent to Mawsons Hut - this is where we will spend the night. At Mawsons we will have an early lunch and then weather permitting, without our overnight packs, we will ski up Jagungal some 7 kms away returning back to the hut some 4 hours latter. Some people will opt to just stay at the hut and relax or play on the slopes around the hut.
The following day there is a second chance to go up Jagungal in the morning if the weather did not permit an ascent the previous afternoon.
And then its ski out retracing our steps. There is a lot more downhill on the way home so its a lot faster. Less than 1.5 hours back to Schlink Hilton Hut and then about another 2 hours back to the cars, snowploughing down the road that we walked up on Friday night.

You should have carried an overnight pack on skis before and you must be able to do basic snow-plough turns witha pack on. Generally the skiing is generally easy except for the return down the road from Schlink Hilton Hut. Some people may choose to walk back down the road.

If you go all the way to Jagungal then this trip is rated hard. If you go as far as Mawson's Hut then it would be rated medium.
